Basement Finishing

Unlock the potential beneath your feet.

Basement Finishing in New Jersey

An unfinished basement is untapped potential. AJH Construction transforms raw basement spaces into polished living areas - whether you want a home theater, gym, office, playroom, or a full in-law apartment. We handle waterproofing, framing, electrical, and every finish detail.

At AJH Construction, every basement finishing project begins with a thorough site assessment and detailed planning phase. We work closely with you to understand your goals, budget, and timeline — then build a project plan that delivers on all three.

Our trade professionals hold all required New Jersey licenses and certifications. Every aspect of your project is permitted, inspected, and documented — giving you peace of mind and protecting your investment when you sell.

Moisture First — Every Time

The most common and most expensive mistake in basement finishing is skipping proper moisture assessment and remediation before construction begins. AJH Construction evaluates every basement for active water intrusion, seasonal moisture, efflorescence (mineral deposits from water migration), and grading issues before a single stud goes up. If moisture is present, we address it first — through interior drainage systems, sump pump installation or upgrade, exterior waterproofing where accessible, and vapor barrier systems. Finishing over a wet basement without proper remediation results in mold, damaged framing, and destroyed materials within years. We will never recommend skipping this step to save money.

What a Finished Basement Adds to Your New Jersey Home

A properly finished basement in a NJ home adds usable square footage at a fraction of the per-square-foot cost of an addition. Common configurations we deliver across Northern NJ include home theaters with acoustic framing and projector wiring, home gyms with rubber flooring and reinforced ceiling joists for pull-up bars and racks, dedicated home offices with built-in cabinetry and dedicated circuits, and in-law suites with full bathrooms, kitchenettes, and separate egress. Each of these configurations has specific code requirements that AJH Construction addresses during planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to finish my basement in New Jersey?
Yes. Basement finishing in NJ requires a building permit covering framing, electrical, and HVAC. A plumbing permit is required if you are adding a bathroom or wet bar. All work is inspected at rough-in and final stages. AJH Construction handles all permitting. Unpermitted basement finishing is a common disclosure problem at NJ home sales and can require costly remediation.
How do I know if my basement is a good candidate for finishing?
The key factors are ceiling height (7 feet minimum is the NJ code requirement for habitable space), moisture conditions, and foundation condition. AJH Construction provides a free assessment that evaluates all three. If ceiling height is marginal, we discuss options. If moisture is present, we explain remediation scope and cost before any finishing is proposed.
Can a finished basement bedroom count as a legal bedroom in New Jersey?
A basement room can meet bedroom code requirements if it has a compliant egress window (minimum opening size and maximum sill height per NJ IRC), adequate ceiling height, minimum square footage, and proper HVAC. Many NJ basements do not naturally meet egress requirements. AJH Construction evaluates egress compliance during planning and can cut egress windows into foundation walls as part of the project scope where needed.
Do you address waterproofing before finishing?
Yes, always. If our assessment finds any moisture, it is addressed before framing begins. Methods depend on the source and severity: interior perimeter drainage with sump pump, exterior waterproofing membrane, crack injection, or comprehensive vapor barrier systems. We will not skip this step to reduce cost — the consequences of finishing over an unresolved moisture problem are far more expensive than proper remediation.
Can you add a full bathroom to my basement?
Yes. We install basement bathrooms using standard drain rough-ins where the existing drain depth allows, or upflush macerating systems (such as Saniflo) where it does not. Upflush systems are fully code-compliant, do not require breaking the concrete slab, and are widely used in NJ basement additions. All plumbing is coordinated with licensed plumbers and inspected.
